Best Post Handboard Session Foods

Hunger Bustin' Bites

There really is no hunger like post-surfing hunger. Your body is not only exhausted from using every muscle until it feels like a wet noodle, but also from the sun beating down and the salt soaking up all your skin’s moisture. Here’s some of the things I’ve found most satisfying after being out in the water for hours, and really make a difference to your post session recovery:
  1. The Good ‘Ole Plate Lunch is #1.

Chicken plate best post handboard session foods.A plate of chicy chicken goodness this will put you right back where you were before your session .You’ve got everything you could possibly need in here: carbs, protein, fat, and lots of food! For those of you not quite familiar with the plate lunch, it is normally comprised of two generous scoops of rice, a healthy portion of protein (chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, etc.), and a smaller side of some sort of carbohydrate, like macaroni salad. It may sound heavy as you read this right now, but I promise you, when you get out of the water and are offered a plate lunch, you will not refuse.

  1. The Recovery Burger

From hamburgers to chicken burgers to Portobello mushroom burgers, that big round sandwich smothered in sauces, veggies, and cheese is sure to hit the spot! Of course, you can’t have a burger without a side of chips or fries to make sure you’re really full!

  1. Pancakes or Waffles

Pancakes and waffles best post handboard session foods. If you are looking to satisfy a sun-induced sweet tooth, pancakes or waffles give the greatest satisfaction. Imagine after an early morning surf being served pancakes smothered in syrup and topped with chocolate or fruits-- nothing better! Normally, I would say stay away from these unnecessarily heavy carbs, but your body needs to refuel.  So give it what it craves!

  1. BBQ Goodness

The always-craved BBQ. You can set up a BBQ on the beach and eat it right when you get back on the sand! Put the meat and veggies you’re cooking into a plate lunch or just sit down with a messy rack of short ribs or BBQ pork.

  1. Burrito

Burrito best post handboard session foods. The mondo burrito.... or tacos. Basically meat, rice, beans, and avocado packed into a tortilla. There’s something about Mexican food that calls my name when hunger is at its peak. It must be because I know that no matter what I get, I WILL be satisfied afterwards and not left hungry.

If you haven’t noticed a trend, most of these options contain a LOT of protein. There’s a reason for that. Not only is it the best for our body if we want to turn our workout into muscle, but we also crave it because it is tasty and we know it will fill us up! Put it in a plate lunch, wrap it in a burrito, or eat it right off the bone and you’ll be a happy camper-- unless of course you have no desire for anything savory.  In that case see #3 and you’ll join the other campers in being happy.
