How to hold your breath longer: bodysurfing

Now that we have seen the importance of everyday correct breathing in Breathing 101. We are going to take a look at training to hold your breath for longer periods Although the vast majority of surfers will never suffer a two- to three-wave hold down or stare down a 20-footer, we’ve all felt a sense of panic as we scramble to the surface.

Needless to say, we could all benefit from learning to hold our breath longer. There are various different methods to training and breath holding practice It is a good time to add doctors still don't know the exact long term effects of Holding your breath for extended periods of time. Doctors are told to pronounce a death after breathing stops for 5min so it goes without saying that you need to be careful

Tips before you start.

There are few things to keep in mind:

    Be Careful

  • This is no joke. Be very careful when practicing to hold your breath because you could pass out or black out. So when you are doing your exercises do them on land and clear of objects you could crack your noggin on if you fall, better yet sit! and probably even a better Idea is get a friend to do it with you. Jay Moriarty tragically Died while practicing holding his breath underwater in the Maldives . Mark Healy has said the closest he has come to Drowning has been in a pool 4 feet deep, you have been warned.
  • Get mentally prepared

  • Before you start to train know that you will be able to hold your breath longer when you are not being timed or aware that you are not being timed. That’s how much of it is purely mental.”A good trick to use when training is to go from A-Z on the alphabet and think of a friend for every letter use Famous or historic people for letters you can't think of a friend.
  • Keeping calm

  • The rules for holding your breath while you’re free diving or standing still are the polar opposite to holding your breath while you’re taking a beating. In diving, you want to relax and get calm. In surfing, if you’re taking a beating, you’re already stressed and expending a lot of energy.“You need to go to your happy spot to calm yourself when you’re getting worked. That helps.”

Improve the length you hold your breath in one day with some simple Techniques.

There are various methods out there this we tried and seems to work well for us and will have you holding your breath longer in not time.

To Increase your lung capacity. Practice deep breathing and follow the next three steps to increase the amount of air your body can accept when you inhale. Deep breathing will also help you develop control of your breathing.

    Determine your base time

  • You need to know your starting point so get out the stopwatch and time yourself as you hold your breath. Time your breathing three times then calculate the average of the three. This is your starting point.
  • Start each day with deep breathing

  • Each morning take a few minutes to work with your breathing. While laying flat on your back, place one hand flat on your stomach and the other just above so that it rests on your chest. Inhale slowly as much as you can, hold for a count of three, then exhale all of the breath. You should feel your chest expand on the inhale and contract when you exhale. Concentrate and practice so that your lungs take in a lot of air and expand with the breath.
  • Loosening and relaxing

  • Inhale then relax. Concentrate on loosening and relaxing your muscles while inhaling and holding your breath. When you tense, your body wants to inhale. It is the carbon dioxide in your lungs that wants to exhale which causes you to tense up and feel panic when holding your breath. By relaxing you give your body more time to hold the breath.
  • Slowly release carbon dioxide

  • Practice controlled exhaling. Holding your breath doesn't mean you cannot exhale. If you allow the carbon dioxide to slowly leave your body through slow and controlled exhalation. During your practice sessions, as you are holding your breath, be prepared to exhale a little at a time.

Tips for holding your breath longer while exerting energy

Hypoxic training is the name given to exercise that involves swimming or otherwise exertion in short bursts while holding your breath. It's quiet obviously holding your breath while standing or sitting calmly on land is a little different to getting a beating while in High surf. If you have the idea to go out then you practice for holding your breath while doing Cardio. This means you will be used to trying to hold your breath while exerting energy.

Mark Healy's tips

Mark Healy says "My favorite breath holding exercise is to find a good stationary bike that shows resistance level, RPMs, and time.

First, I'll find a medium/high resistance level and get it going up to an RPM rate that is high -- but at the same time is something that I know I can keep up for 45 minutes. I'll do a five-minute warm-up, and then start my breath-holds. Where I'm at now, I do 30 seconds holding my breath, then a minute breathing, 30sec hold, one minute breathe. The whole point is to keep the resistance and RPM's the same the whole time. So if there was a printout of what you did on the bike it wouldn't show ups and downs, just a constant even pace. I'll do this for half an hour breathing only through my mouth. This exercise teaches my body to deal with oxygen and carbon dioxide more efficiently and to 'recover on my feet'. When I'm done with the exercise I will have held my breath for 10 minutes out of 30.

Other great ways to Train using Hypoxic training

In the pool

Swim a warm-up 400 metres or so. Then try this:

- 25 meters freestyle, no breathing. Head down all the way. Do 10 sets of these, with 15 seconds gap in between each set.

Follow this with:

- 25 meters underwater swimming. If you have fins, use 'em. Do 10 sets, and chase each set with 25 meters nice slow, breathing freestyle. 20 seconds gap on these ones.

Bodysurfing

bodysurfing as an excellent form of cross-training for larger surf -- it's essentially hypoxic, and has the advantage of being fun to do in surf you'd never paddle out to ride.
